__ ASSOCIATION OF SINGAPORE PATENT AGENTS __________________

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Welcome to our new website!

We are pleased that you are visiting our website and hope that, through this website, you will learn more about the patent profession in Singapore and, in particular, our association.

As you may be aware, there is a national objective is to make Singapore an intellectual property management hub in the Asia-Pacific region and create a new and vibrant intellectual property industry in Singapore. It has also been reported that the industry will generate more than 5,000 jobs and will require a new group of highly-specialised experts such as intellectual property (“IP”) lawyers, patent agents, patent engineers, technologists and chief IP officers.

Our association, known as ASPA for short, was formed in February 2002. Its formation was the result of the enactment of the Patents (Patent Agents) Rules 2001 on 2 January 2002 which introduced a new profession of qualified patent agents in Singapore.

ASPA aspires to promote and enhance the new profession of registered patent agents in Singapore. We aim to do this by promoting and encouraging acceptable minimum standards of quality work, integrity and conduct. In particular, we are and have been

·       promoting the education and training of patent agents and patent trainees;

·       assisting in the institution and introduction of practice, procedure, training and legislation concerning patents;

·       establishing rules, directive and a code of conduct pertaining the profession of patent agents; and

·       engaging in activities and reciprocal co-operation with other associations, national and international.

ASPA has the support of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) and has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Intellectual Property Academy to assist in training patent agents and other IP specialists in Singapore.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any query or wish to seek any information concerning our association or the patent profession.

Tan Tee Jim, S.C.
